Monta Vista Pro 3.1 and ML403

I have a Xilinx ML403 board running with Monta Vista Linux Pro 3.1. I want to be able to read inputs from some of the push buttons on the board and some of the header pins. Anyone know of any drivers or programs to do this? Else, how could I even start?
