Monitor settings in Mandrake 8.1

I just installed Mandrake 8.1. The problem I am having is that there are two lines down either side of the screen that flicker badly. It really messes with my ability to work with or test anything else. I am rather new to Linux. When I did install I set the screen rez to 800 x 600 at 15, and the monitor set to generic SVGA. (I have a DELL monitor, no idea of the model). All of this was the default the installer chose. What should I do to change settings and see if I can fix this? Please be as simple as you can. I am not really up on the linux file structure yet. I have the KDE everment installed if that helps. I also have this computer on a KVM switch so I know that the monitor works ok. Sorry if this desn't explain vary well.
