monitor resolution only get larger

I just did a fresh install of slack 9 got everything to work perfect with a lil tweaking accept the monitor. It is a KDS 19" monitor capable of up to 1600x1200. It is not in the list of monitor so to up the resolution to 1280x1024 I use the typical (generic) setups. I have tried all the settingd in this and messing with XF86Config everytime I do anything then the resolution goes up to like 640x480 instead of what kde defaults at which it looks to be 800x600. The only way to fix this is to copy the old XF86Config back which has no monitor setting at all. If you bring up the default settings in KDE its says MY MONITOR with no screen resolution default...just blank. Am I missing something here? Please help if you can...thanks so much? :Pengy:

Have you got the manual for the monitor? If you have, come out of X and manually edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file.

Look for the Monitor section.

Look for the HorizSync and VertRefresh lines and put the values from your monitor manual into them.

Then, look for the Screen section.

Find the DefaultDepth line and see what screen depth you have set. Then find the corresponding Display Subsection. Add an entry to the modes line with the desired resolution. If you add it at the start of the line, it will be the default. You can change the resolutions in X with CTRL+ALT++ or CTRL+ALT+-

Then just restart X

Hope this helps,

Darren.

Think you risk destroying your monitor? I'm not saying its wrong just for informations sake.

Still Not Working

I assume this is what you were talking about:

If your card can handle it, a higher default color depth (like 24 or 32)
# is highly recommended.

# DefaultDepth 8
# DefaultDepth 16
DefaultDepth 24
# DefaultDepth 32

# "1024x768" is also a conservative usable default resolution. If you
# have a better monitor, feel free to try resolutions such as
# "1152x864", "1280x1024", "1600x1200", and "1800x1400" (or whatever your
# card/monitor can produce)

Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 32
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

I added the 1280x1024 since my default depth was 24 but it still goes to 800x600 or maybe 1024x768, I cant really tell since I am so used to higher resolutions, ...what is the deal here lol? I don't get it...any other ideas?
