Monitor: refresh rate
 

When the monitor and video card were detected and configured automatically, refresh rate (frequency) was set only as an interval, eg. 50 - 120 Hz, not as a value, eg. 85 Hz.

How do I set the frequency to, for example, 85 Hz? And how can I check the actual frequency? I think it is way too low at the moment, because there is visible flickering at some parts of the screen.

My video card: nvidia geforce 2
My monitor: samsung syncmaster 957 DF
Distro: Red hat 8.0

I already installed nvidia driver (as it was suggested in some other threads here), but don't see any difference except the startup logo.

my preferred way is to use http://koala.ilog.fr/cgi-bin/nph-colas-modelines to generate modelines for whatever arbitrary frequency you want and manualy add them.

You can check the actual frequencies being used by running xvidtune (among others). In order to change the settings, however, you will need to edit the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and change the entried under Section "monitor".

acid_kewpie: what do I type for minimum of the max bandwidth of your graphic card (or dot clock) and the max bandwidth of your monitor (in Mhz) ? At samsung site and nvidia's site there is only *one* single bandwidth, 2.7 GB/s for nvidia geforce mx 400 and 250 MHz for my monitor.

Would it be ok if I put 250 for max bandwidth and leave default (20) for min bandwidth?

And where shall I put the lines I get at that page? It says in the ModeLines section, but I dont have it in my XF86Config.

Never mind. I found out the refresh rate is already 85 Hz (with xvidtune, thanx to Thymox). It seems there are problems with higher resolution. I switched from 1280 x 1024 to 1280 x 960 (the flickering was still there) and then to 1152 x 864 @ 85 Hz. At this resolution it's ok.

I still don't quite get it, because in WinXP the picture is fine at 1280 x 1024 @ 85 Hz.
