monitor out of range

Hi there,

I've just installed Redhat 9 (all well and good) but on it's first boot it loads up most of the way before my monitor drops out and gives the message:

Out of Range
Hf 28kHz - 83KHz
Vf 40 Hz - 120 Hz
26.8 kHz/43 Hz.

But I'm not sure what to do in order to change the settings - I figure there must be some kind of safe mode, or something I can enter on the command line.

Cheers

Sounds like you need to edit your XF86config file(s) - this should list the modes your monitor can support, you can try man XF86Config for more info on the config files that X uses. There are graphical tools to change these settings, but I'm assuming they're not much use to you at the moment.

You can switch to several text-mode command lines by ctrl+alt+F1 to F6, and F7, which will be the graphical display when you get it working

The good news is that it appears that X itself is running allright, just trying to run the monitor at a too higher refresh rate.

and oh, yeah, about the error message from your monitor:

Quote:
Out of Range
Hf 28kHz - 83KHz
Vf 40 Hz - 120 Hz
26.8 kHz/43 Hz.
This should help you enter the correct modes - The horizontal refresh must be between 28 and 83kHz, and the vertical between 40 and 120Hz, X is using H=26.8kHz, this is the problem.

on the command line tell grub or lilo or whatever to boot into single user mode (This is if you're using a graphical login manager -- otherwise just log in and before starting X)

edit /etc/X11/XF86Config

change the HorizSync and VertRefresh of the monitor section.

Cheers. I'm ready to go. The only problem is that I can't get to a command line. When it boots up it offers me some options including "press c to go to a command line" however it only seems to have a limited range of commands available, and edit isn't one of them.

I've also tried letting it load up and using the CTRL+ALT+F1-6, which works well for when the screen drops out, but it seems to be hanging at "Starting firstboot: " and any of the subsequent screens I open up don't actually have a prompt.
