monitor flickering w/linux, not windows

We recently moved to a condo that sits rather close to a major power line... while booted into Mandrake Linux 10.0, with an nVidia Geforce 2 64MB video card, and a 19" CRT monitor, the screen flickers, as if the screen is bouncing back and forth VERY fast. I can still see the screen and the colors are clear, but the constant fickering hurts my eyes.

YET, when I boot into Windows XP pro on the very same computer, there is no problem at all.

This happened a year ago too when I had an electric fan close to the monitor... RedHat 9 flcikered like crazy while windows did not.

I really want to learn more about linux and I love using it... but how am I to figure this issue out?

Are you using an actual nvidia driver, or are you running in framebuffer?? I have found that video performance is better with the official nvidia driver (from nvidia's website) in constrast to other nvidia drivers for linux (or framebuffer)....

Hi,

Maybe you have the wrong monitor selected or Maybe chaging your screen refresh rate would solve the problem?

In Mandrake go into "configure your computer" (mandrake control center), click hardware, then click monitor. There you can select the monitor or choose a generic monitor resolution and refresh rate to use. Don't set the refresh rate higher than your monitor can support, though
