When i installed linux (like a week ago) I configured it for this really crappy monitor that my friend gave me, i recently bought anotherone tho. for a wile linux seemed to be running fine with the new monitor but then came XFree86... I watched in horror as my screen flattened out and became completly distorted. It was so horrible that if i had epilepsy i probly would be having a seisure right now, How can i get back into my monitor configuration

Try running the Xconfigurator as root. It should be able to probe the new monitor for its settings. If not, check the specs for your monitor in the manual and edit the /etc/X11/XFConfig file in the monitor subsection. Especially check the horizontal and vertical rates to make sure they match.
