Monitor change problem - Mandrake 9.1

Hi!

I just had to change the monitor for my Mandrake 9.1 machine yesterday. I didn't have time to test the new monitor, and I no longer have the old one. The machine wasn't powered down while the monitor was being changed, and now I'm not getting a signal at all. The monitor doesn't turn on, so all I see is blackness. I'm assuming I would have to change something in the setting, but I'm new to Linux and not very good with hardware, so any advice for a newbie in this area is greatly appreciated.

The new monitor (which is older than the old monitor) : Viewsonic E651-3 50/60Hz

I have ssh root access to the machine, so I'll be able to execute any necessary commands to make Mandrake recognize the monitor. I'll be glad to provide whatever other information required.

Thanks.

probably have to do something like alter the hsync and vert refresh rates in /etc/X11/XF86Config.

Then restart any X processes that are running.

stats look to be:
Horiz 30-54
Vert ~86

Hmmm .. I understand that it would make sense to change the refresh rate. I've looked at the XF86Config file and I'm still not sure what excatly I have to modify. The file is pretty long, so here's a link: http://67.70.61.106/XF86Config.txt

looks kinda like a cookie cutter config... it might be simpler to show you what is in one of my XF86Configs...

Section Monitor
Identification "My Monitor"
HorizSync 31.5 - 50.0
VertRefresh 40 - 90
EndSection

EDIT: I'm not real sure how useful having all those modeline options in the monitor section are, I would comment them out until you need them if I were you.

Hmmm .. I've tried adding
HorizSync 30-54
VertRefresh 86

to XF86Config. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what windows were open when the monitor was changed, so I'll have to find a way to get my old monitor back for a few minutes and see what's going on.

I'll update when that's done.

Hmm, are you sure the monitor is *actually* working? Have you tried ctrl+alt+F1 (or F2 or F3...) to get to a text-mode console? - those should be at a nice low res that any monitor can support....
