Monitor blacks out after boot

Hey
I'm new to Linux so forgive me for not knowing specifics. I am doing a group project and we need to install Fedora 8 on old server from Compaq. It it Proliant 6400R. The problem that we have is that after the installation the server reboots. But, when it is about to load GUI the screen shows for a fraction of a second Fedora background, some blue object and goes black. We figured out that this could be a problem witht the video card. For example how do you change display settings on Fedora 8 i.e. what command line option.

It should be the video card because that server had Fedora 4 before that and had not problems whatsoever. Thanks for help

actually, that sounds more like a window manager problem, if it goes arty graphics to plain black

try ctrl+alt+ backspace to stop said supposed window manager after the black screen, you might be able to accomplish more troubleshooting from the command line.

Welcome to LQ. What kind of monitor are you using? Most likely the video settings are not compatible with your monitor. To change them, edit the xorg.conf file (which should be in the /etc/X11 directory) then use your favorite text editor to change them. (This is a common topic and there are a number of threads here at LQ covering it.) As noted above, pressing Alt-Ctl-Backspace should drop you to the command line
