Have you configured a proper driver for your video card? What kind of video card do you have?

What size is this monitor?

The only reference I could find was for a Tatung C5M 15" monitor. Although my old 14" could run 1024x768, we have another 14" here that will only do 640x480. If it's a 15" monitor, it may be that 800x600 is the best it will do.

If you know for sure it can do 1024x768 or the monitor is expendable, you could try adding a suitable ModeLine in your xorg.conf or XF86Config.
# Use of incorrect modelines could cause permanent damage to some
# older monitors - you have been warned!
ModeLine "1024x768@53Hz" 55 1024 1048 1208 1264 768 776 784 817
