Modifying kernel to support old ext file system

Okay,

Like a moron I upgraded my server from RH 8.0 to Fedora Core 3, but one drive on the server was formatted using RH 7.0 - I now cannot mount the drive (ext fs not supported) and I've tried to identify it as ext2 and I get an incorrect fs type.

So, how do I (a) find out if the drive is really of type ext; and (b) modify my kernel to support the fs type long enough to grab the data off of it?

Many thanks,
Michael

Well, as I recall the default fs type for rh7.0 was in fact ext2. So provided that the fs isn't corrupt, it should just be a matter of recompiling the kernel with ext2 support. Iirc, you do get an "incorrect fstype" without support in the kernel (or as a module). Strange that you don't have ext2 support though, as ext3 support forces ext2 support, or so I thought. Did you custom compile the kernel?
