Modems and Linux! Just my luck!!!

Well i dont know what to say! I am getting really frustrated and i am about to throw linux out the window!!!
I had a connexant internal modem (winmodem) which was not supported by linux. I tried getting it to work (without buying the drivers) but no luck. So since i love linux i decided to buy a new modem. I was told that external modems get the job done!
i went and bought D-Link DFM-562E external 56k serial modem.
And then the problems begun!
First it was Ubuntu. I managed to connect to the net but everytime i was connected whith the lightning speed of 900bytes per second. In windows i got 5.5kb/s.
Then it was yoper that didn't even know the modem was there.
So i tried Fedora Core 2. The modem seem to connect to the ISP but no internet! Uknown hosts all over the place!!! Kudzu removed the configuration files on boot even though the modem was connected on the pc and when i ran kudzu again seemed to configure it ok! But no net!

Well since dsl is not an option where i live ($75 per month) i think i will give up. It just not worth the time nor the money!

This is my last resort! Anyone got an answer for the above plz tell me! I just can't take it anymore!

Thanks in advance!!!

I have been using a serial modem in fedora core 2 for a time, but with the information you provide I can't help you (maybe a guru could). Try choosing one distribution, configuring the modem and then posting the steps you have followed and the problems you have found and be sure than someone will help you with your problem.

I managed to make my modem work at a normal speed using wvdial.

I don't know the problem with kppp or network control in gnome but i think it has something to do with the file ppp0!

If anyone has an answer plz let me know!
Thanks!
