modem woes

Hi

I've never had to install a modem before and now that I do I'm lost.

Some information:
(K)ubuntu 5.04
US Robotics PCI 56k voice software modem

Someone told me to load the ppp modules so i tried that
~# modprobe ppp
and got
FATAL: Module ppp not found.

I'm pretty sure the ppp modules are somewhere there.

I also tried insmod and got nowhere.

Took a look at pppconf, pppd, kppp but none of them could find the modem.

I'm pretty much lost...if someone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Probably not what you're going to want to hear, but here goes. If you're new, resist the urge to install PCI internal modems WHETHER OR NOT they are linux compatible. Both require drivers. I have installed both . It can take 3 days or three weeks depending upon several factors.
If you want on the net NOW......then I suggest the following and wait for a little more experience for the PCI modem:

If at all possible , go DSL. If not then.....
1. Make sure your ISP is linux friendly
2. Use an external serial port modem
3. they require no drivers
4. They are generally faster than many PCI modems
5. Google for BestData or US Robotics ( $20-$100)
6. Local thrift shops have them for $2-$10

If you decide to install PCI, there should be a readme or install text file with the drivers. Take all shotguns and cute puppies out of the house first.

good luck
Go Linux!
