Modem Troubles

I have a Broadxent 56k modem in my system. I read in my linux book that to find an internal modem I had to echo the serial ports.

echo "82364895932" > /dev/ttyS0
(repeat process through ttyS3 until modem picks up and dials)

I did this and nothing happens

I confirmed that my modem speaker was on by

echo "atv > /dev/ttyS0

Whats going on? does anyone have step-by-step instructions on how to manually find a PCI modem in linux RH9?

To see the serial ports configured, enter
Code:
setserial -bg /dev/ttyS?
. To see your pci ports enter
Code:
lspci

If it's an internal modem, you probably must be a winmodem. Check out www.linmodems.org for more information. You would probably need to download the modem driver. My 2 cents.
