Modem Trouble
First let me say hi to everyone here, it looks like a great community you have set up. Second, I'm a complete newbie to linux, having only ever played around with things like cygwin to get used to basic commands etc. My command line knowledge extends to gcc, gzip, and directry traversal type commands. So, not very knowlegable.
I've installed SuSE 8.0 Pro with no issues, and it seems to be a good OS. However, my modem isn't supported, it being a winmodem and all. I know its an AC'97 modem, but thats about as much as I know about it. If there are any drivers out there for it then Id love to be shown where. If not, then I dont mind buying a real modem. I live in the UK, and would like to know of an external modem that will definitly work under SuSE, that I can buy online. I'd rather not have to spend more than about £80 (about $110 I think) on it. Any suggestions for drivers or new modems?
Much appreciated,
Chris.

You will need to know the chipset version/model/manufacturer or the driver before you can find the driver. And if you are a newbie, you will not want to attempt to configure this as it will take modprobe's and editing of config files. You can buy a good supported hardware modem on pricewatch.com for 40 bucks. Good luck.

have a look here - www.linmodems.org. As mentioned you need to know exactly what winmodem you have. If you are lucky enough to have a supported one, the RPM for SuSe installs with no techy intervention at all. I had a bit of a side effect on mine where the system wouldn't boot after installation of the driver, but up untill the reboot the driver worked sweet. This was on a laptop, so you may have more luck.
Cheers

Cristopher go to Linmodems.org and download scanmodem.tz.
Run the util and take the output (Modemdata.txt)and e-mail it
back to them. They may be able to help you. Unfortunately my
winmodem is not supported and I will have to try something
else. Pcmcia maybe.

Thank you for all your help people. I think I'm going to buy a modem though. And out of interest would anyone be able to tell me if the Toshiba Satellite 4030CDS works with Linux? I could have one coming my way and it'd be coolt o have a linux laptop.
