I have an U.S. Robotics 56.k v.92 external modem, and i'm trying to get it to work under my RedHat 9 distro. I currently am on a dual boot Windowsxp/RedHat9, and the only way for me to connect to the internet at this time is though windows. Can someone please help me Find the right ports and stuff to connect.

If it's an external serial modem, then no - Linux has built-in support for the serial interface - no drivers needed.

chipwizzard; u hve me lol, no not at u but what confounds. am newbie to understand where u coming from and its ok just patience is all u need. ok now answer to 1st? yes if cd has drivers(providing they are supporting Linux) install. no modems have no embedded firmware that i know. 3rd? manner of speaking yes monopoly by w like gangbusters made early in start which won over device industry with providing it drivers so that devices & their os would/does work smoothly. linux did not start until later
there is rub! but linux is forging ahead with those issues out of necessity.
this is why we as user,s must diligently enter every device used by use into
the hardware compatiabilty lists available for developers .compliers, designers provide us users with those tools for the new devices surfacing the market. also making mfg,s aware that if they provide we will buy their products. with EMPHASIS!

Skyline,
Your right Linux did detect my modem but it uses a usb, and i don't know what to assign it /dev/modem? Do you know what i mean? I tried the
"wvdialconf create" command to see where it might be located but it kept pausing and sh*t and made me wana call it a dirty word. If it would be easier to install i also have an internal Intel 537ep v.92 voice modem?????

chipwizzard; am a newbie too. everything i,ve done is by os without a hitch.
advice: drivers are firmware so installing is inserting diskette with driver on it & mounting driver in where needed. may be easier if disk copy has command instruction on it. then all is up to interface between os & floppy drive to install driver.
