I have an U.S. Robotics 56.k v.92 external modem, and i'm trying to get it to work under my RedHat 9 distro. I currently am on a dual boot Windowsxp/RedHat9, and the only way for me to connect to the internet at this time is though windows. Can someone please help me Find the right ports and stuff to connect.
-not: If you haven't already noticed i am a complete newbie to linux...please keep that in mind.
Thanx in advance
chipwizzard; have contacted usr support? direct help from mfg is best its their product. they may support linux which would be almost instant results.
via usr inquiry if they do support linux.
Penguin4,
I was going to concact USR today. My modem came with a insallation cd, so do i have to install any drivers for it to work or are they imbedded in the hardware? Why is it hat no one supports Linux? "Manopoly i guess"
Thanx
chipwizzard; u hve me lol, no not at u but what confounds. am newbie to understand where u coming from and its ok just patience is all u need. ok now answer to 1st? yes if cd has drivers(providing they are supporting Linux) install. no modems have no embedded firmware that i know. 3rd? manner of speaking yes monopoly by w like gangbusters made early in start which won over device industry with providing it drivers so that devices & their os would/does work smoothly. linux did not start until later
there is rub! but linux is forging ahead with those issues out of necessity.
this is why we as user,s must diligently enter every device used by use into
the hardware compatiabilty lists available for developers .compliers, designers provide us users with those tools for the new devices surfacing the market. also making mfg,s aware that if they provide we will buy their products. with EMPHASIS!
Skyline,
Your right Linux did detect my modem but it uses a usb, and i don't know what to assign it /dev/modem? Do you know what i mean? I tried the
"wvdialconf create" command to see where it might be located but it kept pausing and sh*t and made me wana call it a dirty word. If it would be easier to install i also have an internal Intel 537ep v.92 voice modem?????
Penguin4,
No, i dont have any drivers that support Linux. lol. I was on hol for four hours today with USR, and when i finally got someone all he could say was "Sorry we do not support Linux!" I about went through the roof!! I'm stuck with this modem thing and well its very frustrating!
chipwizzard; ouch well that is to bad for usr they are off my list to buy from.
no support for linux oh what a blow below the knee caps. looks as if u may
have use some thing else unless some other members come to u r rescue.
sorry over my head end of road for me.
Penguin4,
Yea its alright i'll fix it......someday. This is kind of off thu subj. but do you think learning VB is a waste of time if im on Linux most of the time?
Penguin4,
>>>"yes it is! Just one word ENJOY"<<< Sorry but i don't understand it is or isn't a waste of time? And what did you mean by enjoy? Yea guess what, Intel supplies drivers for an Intel 537 modem for RedHat linux!! Just what i need
But theres a catch i have know idea how to install the drivers, im a newbie to Linux..... Do you think you could help me? If it would be easier ( imean if you decide to help me) you could email me: chipwizzard@yahoo.com
Thanx for al the advice!
chipwizzard; am a newbie too. everything i,ve done is by os without a hitch.
advice: drivers are firmware so installing is inserting diskette with driver on it & mounting driver in where needed. may be easier if disk copy has command instruction on it. then all is up to interface between os & floppy drive to install driver.
