Hi all out there,
can you give me details of a reliable Modem/Router with Firewall for use with Windows XP and Linex, (a dual booted system) which is available in the UK? I was interested in the Netgear DG834G but I have read conflicting reports about it. Another one is the BT Voyager 2100 or 2110 but cannot find much info about this. Are there any others, please? Many thanks for your attention.
Frankee.
P.S. Any recommendations or otherwise of the above would help!
ANY ethernet based ADSL router will be fine, there is NO operating system dependency at all if you are running on ethernet. Personally i run a 2110 at home and it's fine. just buy what you like the look of and you'll do fine. I think the reason you've not found the informatino you're after is that the information doesn't need to exist... ethernet is ethernet. it can't not support Linux.... (and the Voyagers all run linux themselves anyway)

Many thanks Chris, for information re ethernet, linux and ethernet based ADSL routers. You have cleared up a couple of points that I have been in doubt about up till now.
I have read that the Voyager is very easy to set up for Windows XP, but can you give me some idea as to whether there could be any problems setting it up for Linux as I am a raw beginner with the latter?
Thanks again,
Frank
as i already said, you don't have ANY os dependency issues with ethernet networks. you do not "set up" a router for windows... it's just another computer on a network.
Play it safe and use which ever ADSL modem your ISP or telecom company recommends and supports. I agree with Acid Kewpie that ADSL sees the modem/router as just another computer. The ISP or telecom tech support people will be able to help you configure the modem if they're familiar with the brand you choose. Here in the states, BellSouth recommends a Westell modem which is strictly a teleco item but it works and the tech support people know the tricks to set it up if you have problems. If I were to buy a Netgear or Linksys ADSL modem/router I'd be on my own if I were to have problems.
Acid Kewpie ! I love your online name ! Very unique, I'll keep it in mind if I need an alias sometime.
Many thanks to all for your answers to my queries. I think I have all the answers to go ahead now,
All the best,
Frankee.
P.S Will let you know how I get on!

Probably a little late for you now by the sound of it, but I would highly recommend this model that I use.
