modem problems (like you havent heard that before but this is a different question)

ok im a newbie to the linux world. i have already found out that linux is picky about its modems. i am running mandrake 9.1 and i want to know which modem i should buy to get on line. i already know that the modem i have right now will now work in linux. i have gone to mandrakes main hardware resourse page and only found 1 modem certified by mandrake. so the question is which one do i buy???

I heard that most external modems are supported by Linux.
An easy way to check if an internal modem will work is to look for Linux drivers for it on the internet before you buy.
Just don't get the USR 5699B.

Hi theasp

An External serial modem is your safest bet.

If you feel like looking into software modems check out this link

Theasp, please do not be fooled by USB modems - they can quite easily by software modems, just like the majority of PCI modems. Just thought I would throw this in as I bought on once - *big* mistake! The general consensus is to go with serial-port modems - and I agree wholeheartedly!

Are there any external serial port modems that won't work with Linux?
