Modem perpetually needs resetting
Hi there,
We have one site running Suse 7.0 Kernal 2.2.16-SMP. We can make a dial up conenction jst fine, but when the session is over and we disconenct the modem refuses all future conenctions until is is physically reset. It will answer the call, but instead of showing a login prompt it just drops the line. Is this likely to be a faulty modem, or are there some configuration options I can try? I can obtain any further info you request (except for Credit Card numbers... ;) ) Rob |
What dialer are you using? Kppp or what?

We dial out from an AIX machine using 'cu'. This lets us perform remote support on the machine until we log off and the modem needs resetting again... :)
We do have other Suse linux customers ranging from 7.2-7.3 and these do not exhibit this behaviour. I am a complete Linux n00b, so please forgive me if I am not providing the relevent info. Rob |
Offhand, I would say you have a shitty modem... But your problem can probably be corrected by creating a new Init String for your modem. You can find the agetty program that is attached to your modem and configured to answer in /etc/inittab file. see man agetty for options.
A good initstring for your modem, on the other paw, is a difficult question. I haven't crafted a manual init string for well over 5 years. |
Thanks for your help.
I'll take a look at the agetty program, but failing that I'll suggest they try swapping out the modem. Cheers, Rob |
