Hi,, u dont need to recompie the kernel for sm 56 top run..
detailed info abt installing the motorla driver can be found at my website

http://infologics.50megs.com

the problem with this modem is that it will only work on kernel version less than 2.4.5 in other words u will be stuck on rh 7.1 all ur life.. If u plan to upgrade to a newer version of linux, try getting the sm56 replaces by a conexant chipset bsed one like d-link. It wud cost something around 650 rs

if u have just bough tu r system , ask ur vendor to get the modem replaced with a dlink one.. i did so ..now i use a dlink internal modemto connect to the net.. fell free to ask for help..

Dear Juby

I had installed the driver...but when i used minicom, it says it couldnt open /dev/modem..no such file or directory.. I checked it ....it exists in /dev and is a sym.link to /dev/sm56.....I then tried to configure using kppp, but again it said..sorry, cant open modem...what could be the problem??..

also my modem is Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem...and the driverwhat you sugggested from your website is for Motorola SM56 sotware modem..is there any difference???....

thanks...
