I have the same problem too. The linux driver provided by Intel is for kernels up to 2.4.18. Mandrake ships with 2.4.19 so the only way I can keep using the modem is by using the previous kernel. I eventually just reinstalled Mandrake 8.2 and then manually updated the packages provided with the 9.0 distribution. I still check Intel's linux driver page every week, looking for an update. Maybe I'll fire off an email to them.

You can find here 536ep drivers for mandrake 9 :

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/Intel/

anyway I can't make it work ! It seems that it don't communicate with the modem and it locks the keyboard.
I can't see where is the conflict !!! If anybody has an idea

Good luck

Mandrake 9 uses a system called devFS. This was invented for the 2.4 kernel . It manages the /dev/(item) directory creating or destroying devices as they are needed.

Traditionally Linux creates hundreds of devices 'in case' you need them, devFS makes the device when it is ordered by the software driver and removes it when there is no need for it. Your problem might be the creation of a link, typically from /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS(x) to the new directory structure /dev/tty/(#).

I had an unsolvable problem with my modem installation because it required me to run 'setserial' on a dev device. The software would create the device, I'd set it up and then the dev system would destroy the link.

Find the setup routine for your modem and run it from the command line or go through 'dmesg' to see what the response is to the modem setup.
