Modem Help!
Hi Everyone!
I need some help with installing my Linmodem! Im using Mandrake 9.0 (kernel 2.4.19-16mdk I think). I have a Conexant modem, it is supported by the drivers. I download the file, install it and there is no /dev/modem or /dev/ttySHSF0 device files. I looked at their FAQ and it said to 'modprobe' it. And it said some errors about tainting the kernel. The modem ID is Manufactuer ID:8086 and Device ID:2486. It said about installing a generic kernel with a ACPI patch. Any help on how to do that or why the modem isnt installing in the first place.
One Note: Ive just gone over to mandrake in the last week, and loving it, but having to use windows for dial-up is annoying.
Also what is a Devfs based system?
Many Thanks.

First you have to determine which knid of modem u have HCF / HSF .. there is a script to determine your modemm too in the site..download the appropriate binaries from www.mbsi.ca. install it, then run some configuration file(h*fconfig) . also remmber to download the driver for ur exact kernel version. it is very important.. the easiest way is to get the rpm fiel from the aforesaid website thats the best way.. it should work properly.. feel free to ask for help.. i gues u r getting an eror coz u havent got a proper version of the driver and a proper versionof the processor if u have p3/p4 processor downalod that verson of the driver..that will fix the problem

I only say that because if you are brand new to Linux, the last thing that you want to be doing is recompiling kernels, writing device drivers, and messing around with advanced topics. It should be as simple as installing and having everything work. Eventually after you read 3 - 4 textbooks on Linux than that's a different story.

Check that hardware compatibility list and make sure it works before you buy it, if that's possible.

Hey Fordy, make sure you have tried everything before you rush down to best buy, man.
If you do decide for a new modem, though,
I recommend a USR Performance Pro, if you stick with dial-up, and your ISP supports, or plans to support V.92 and V.44,
it's a good one to get.
ALL 2.3 and higher kernals have the drivers for it,
you may just have to change init string...

dear may be you dont have a conexant chipset modem.
because its device ID is always = 14f1
and as you said it is = 2486
actually according to my information 2486 is not device id of any modem.
and if you wanna modprobe it then do
"/sbin/modprobe hcfpciserial"

newpenguin, you mean the vendor ID right?
http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/hsf/index.html
Vendor ID: 8086, Device ID: 2486 is listed there as an HSF based modem.

Internel modems just suck, no ifs or buts about it.
If you get a serial external modem then you know it will just work with _any_ OS.
