Modem help?

Running RH 7.2 (2.4.7-10)

Need help with a modem issue. Modem is an external USR 33.6. Modem is hooked up on COM 2. I created a symbolic link for the modem: ln -s /dev/ttyS1 /dev/modem. Configured the modem in minicom to use /dev/ttyS1.

When I connect to it via minicom I noticed it displays the connection settings and status is "offline". However, minicom reports back AT = OK. When I attempt to manually dial out via minicom it comes back with Connection timeout and NO Carrier.

I know that both the modem and line are good.

What am I over-looking?

Program the modem with ATL3 before try a connection. Hear the line sounds for the dial tone and the modem dialing. Basically, you have to hear as you were dialing a phone. Tell me about this test.
