"i'm just looking for a reliable list of other choices that may be available locally
would like a PCI modem, but will settle with external"
Any external serial dial out modem will work. A PCI modem may be a real modem or it may be a winmodem. If it is a real modem then it will cost about the same as an external serial modem. If a PCI modem is cheap then it will be a winmodem and may work if you can find drivers for it.
When I switched to Linux three years I fooled with my winmodem for two days. Then I bought a generic external serial dial out modem and have lived happily ever since.
