if its a winmodem, youre probably not going to get it working under linux. you need to buy a non-winmodem, (a good way to guarentee that a modem is not a winmodem is to buy an external modem; those are never winmodems)or look for a driver for the winmodem. thats near impossible to get working, though, so i recommend getting a non-winmodem (theyre about $50 each)

If you are stuck with a Winmodem (such as an onboard one) then you can go to www.linmodems.org and check the list to see the current compatibility status of your modem. If, however, you have the option of removing your winmodem, then I would go for external serial modems. There are some good USB modems that work well with Linux, but the potential is there for it to be a winmodem too (I had one... d'oh!), whereas serial modems do not.
