modem detection ?

Hi !

I wanted to know how can i be sure that a specific modem is working correctly (not damaged).
I have three internal modems , apart from the one i have installed on my machine :

-Boca research 33.600 ACF modem
-Lucent 1641 c (winmodem) ( 1997 Compaq modem V.34 ISA)
-Rockwell RCVDL56ACF/SP R6761-21

If "the modem is not responding" with kppp can i assume the modem is not working at all ? I have tried it already on windows , and they didn't work too, i would say they are all screwed up , but i just need to be sure before i do something like throw them in the garbage. Is there any way you could fix a modem ?
Or bring John Lennon back ?

:)

thanks for any reply
