Hi,

I am just starting out using Linux (coming from Windows) I am running Linux on my laptop - I have tried Suse 8.1, Redhat 8, Slackware, Mandrake 9 - none of them supported all my hardware so I went to Mandrake 9.1 RC2 which works like a charm !

Any way, the internal modem is a Winmodem - this will not work I know. So I connected an external Hayes Acura v56k Speaker modem to COM1.

I have configured Mandrake 9.1 to dial out but this happens :

1 - It dials the phone number
2 - Authenicates
3 - Says its connected
4 - Imediatley disconects

This is really confusing me, can any one help ? Im sure that the Hayes modem should work correctly but no matter what I do the connection drops. I have tested the modem in Windows and it works fine.
