modem and mouse conflicts

I just installed Fedora core 1. The usb 3 button mouse doesn't work in linux. i installed my intel 537EP modem and when i get into the kppp it locks up when i start to dial. Is there some conflict between the mouse and the modem because the mouse is serial? If I try a different mouse it locks up during boot. Any help would be nice. I am very new to Linux. Thanks
