Modem always gets no dialtone
hi all,
i have just installed mandrake linux 9 and cant get the grin off my face :D this is cool software!! however im having a prob with my internal modem (conexant hsf). i downloaded and installed the driver from http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/hsf/ and all went ok. but when i try to dialup, my modem makes a weird put-put-put noise and i eventually get a 'no dialtone' message from kppp. the modem works fine from windows xp and i cant understand why it isnt working under linux ... im guessing i have to change the modem commands but arent sure which settings to change to what! would really appreciate any help with this :) |
I would try dialing with a dialer other than kppp. Technically, kppp is just a frontend for pppd, but it tends to bypass some of your regular modem settings and do things its own way (which is often, but not always, a good thing). Try Mandrake's basic console dialer (probably pppd) or, better yet, wvdial. You can do it in a terminal window like xterm if you want to keep X running.

maybe make sure you've tried all the drivers available
for that type of modem. getting a winmodem working in linux is usually tricky. the hardware makers will not relase info on them, and people have to hack the stuff out. |
Thanks
Thanks for the help :)
If I can't get it to work I'll try and "gain" an external real modem from somebody :p |
NO DIALTONE
You must force modem dial up, because it not recognize the phone line.If you use Kppp try:
Kppp>modem>modem_commands>Initialization string 2=ATX3. I have same problem and it worked! Bye! |
