Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Mobo monitor

At one time I had a CompUsa 233mhz computer that had an small program
option to monitor mobo voltages, fan speed, cpu and mobo temperatures.
An icon was always on the task bar with two green lights if everything
was ok. I started to see, once in a while, two red lights and a
warning about cpu temperature. The cpu fan was varying in speed and
beginning to fail. One day I had a complete fan failure and I shut
down immediately. Normally a right click on the icon would open a
small window with virtual analog meters showing the mobo results. I
believe the mobo was equiped with the necessary hardware to monitor
these options and the small program was designed to run with these
options. With the desire for quieter fans, I would think this would be
good insurance.
I have a Linux only computer, no windows on it.
I suspect the program has to match the mobo's configuration and with all the mobos available, it might be difficult to do.
Is there anything like this for Linux computers?

Thank you.

Richard

lm_sensors

I think lm_sensors would do the job
http://secure.netroedge.com/~lm78/

It's a command line thingie for gettin the temperatures. Might take a little tweakin to get right.

And I'm sure thers gui's or something for it. I keep thinking gkrellm might have something to show the temp on its display
http://web.wt.net/~billw/gkrellm/gkrellm.html

might try searchin around sourceforge.net or freshmeat.net
