Question mnt cd-rw in 2.6.9-gentoo-r9

I'm new to Gentoo Linux and having a problem trying to mount my cd-rw drive. Here's what happens:
Mystic root # cd /mnt
Mystic mnt # ls
burner dvdrom floppy part2
Mystic mnt # mount /mnt/burner
mount: block device /dev/hda is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda, or too many mounted file systems

I have a dvd-rom drive as /dev/hdb and that mounts fine, so I really don't know what's going on with this one. Any suggestions?

are you sure it's hda1? are you running on SATA for your actual system? what is the /etc/fstab entry for it?
