Minolta PagePro 1250W in Linux

I need the usb printer driver for this printer. I plugged it in the usb port and it saw it as the correct model, but there was no driver for it. All the ones I tried did absolutely nothing.

by the way im running redhat 9

Not trying to be a jerk, but did you read the README file? I used the 0.0.1 version and it installed easily (and I had only used Linux for 2 days). I haven't looked at or tried the 0.0.5 version yet (thanks for pointing it out), so I don't know if I can help you.

yes i did, but this is the first time i've used linux, so i have no clue about how to put in any of those commands, and whenever i try i get an error message.

You're going to need to be more specific on what you type and what error messages you're getting.

First, you're going to need to be root to install it. If you're in a terminal window as you, just type "su" (without the quotes) and it will ask you for the root password. Then, when you're in the directory with all the Minolta files that you uncompressed, type "make" (again, without the quotes). It should compile some more files. If that works ok, type "make install" which should copy files to their proper places. The "make clean" that is mentioned in the README isn't crucial to getting your printer working, but it gets rid of some files and frees up space on your hard drive. Then you just go into the printer manager and set up the printer. The printer should be listed.

OK thats why, I extracted the files into a folder, then tried to do that, but I wasn't logged in as root. I'll try logging in as root and trying again.

Thanks!

At first it didn't work, but then I found that that was due to the fact that I didn't have the development tools installed. I installed them and typed make, make install and make clean in a terminal window at the folder with them.

It didn't show up in the printing box. Do I have to restart or something? Also, during the make process, I typed make, then it stopped doing anything so i started to tpye make install, and two more lines of information came up. I just typed make install and make clean and neither of them had any problems. What was I supposed to type when it stopped halfway through make? I didn't get any errors though.

That just installs the driver, which converts from PostScript to a format the 1250W (or 1200W, or 1300W, or 1350W) can understand. You also need what's called a PPD file. LinuxPrinting.org has a PPD - http://www.linuxprinting.org/ppd-o-m...o_1250W&show=0 is the URL for it.

I personally don't know how to use printconf-gui, as I've barely used any RedHat version. Look for a button to select your own PPD, or use third-party or manufacturer drivers when you add the printer. Put the PPD that you just downloaded in. It should install. Now, add the printer, making sure to select Minolta as the brand (IIRC - if not, it's Minolta-QMS), and PagePro 1250W as the model. There should only be one driver choice, Foomatic/min12xxw (recommended). Select it. Make sure the right paper size is selected, and PLEASE do not use 1200x1200 DPI. If you haven't tried this printer with Windows, you will think it is a total piece of crap - it's not - the driver's handling of that resolution SUCKS. I haven't tried 1200x600 DPI, but 600x600 DPI works well enough. Keep toner saver off - I used it with 300x300 DPI, and got dot-matrix quality (ugh).

I did a quick look around, and found that RH9 doesn't support adding PPDs to printconf-gui.

n e r d 08-04-2004 09:39 PM

So does that mean I can't install my printer?

bhtooefr 08-05-2004 09:04 AM

You still can, but you've got to use other tools. I've never liked this wizard, but try going to http://localhost:631/printers and adding one through there. If it asks you your password, the username is root, and the password is your root password.

Also, the KDE printing manager should allow you to add a printer. Try it.

Like I said, I've got almost no experience on RH. I could walk you through on PrinterDrake, but that doesn't help you. So, anyone with RH experience want to help here?

Good news for you...

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...54#post1094454

I figured out how to use that localhost:631 thing. Read that post, and it will tell you everything you need except how to make the printer the default printer if you have any others set up already.

When you download the PPD and select the printer, make sure you use 1250, not 1300, and the printer is a "Minolta-QMS PagePro 1250W" for when you're setting up the port for it.
