migrate to another partition
 

I have Kubuntu gutsy on hda4, feisty on hdb1, a failed installation of gutsy on hda3, and edgy on hda1. I am very shurt of space fo gutsy and could either take all of hdb for it or. if possible (and this os preferable) use hda1 asd hda3. I presume hda2 in the swap partition. Can I don this with grub and any other tools that I probably have already?

I don't want to go through a reinstallation again now because it took hours to get all my Thunderbird stored messages to work in the new partition. Would it be safe to put all the gutsy files (about 45G) on DVDs and copy them to a clean partition? I am leery of using partial backups and missing something I should have backed up but forgot.

First of all do the backup.

/usr makes up about 50% of your system. Assuming that /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda3 are about the same size. I recommend that you move /usr to /dev/hda3 and the rest of gutsy to /dev/hda1.

Success, after a fashion
 

I found from Qtparted that hda2 was an unused sliver so used fdisk to combine the three. This left my last two installations untouched for transferring any files I hadn't backed up. I managed my Tbird files better this time by going beyond the 'default' level and dragginf folders from the mounted partitions. Thanks for your help.
