Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop preventing boot up

I'm trying to install gentoo kernel 2.6.10-r6 with the "Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop (wireless optical mouse and keyboard). I can boot up gentoo and (use the keyboard) when the wireless reciever is connected to the PS/2 port (mouse will not work). When I have the setup connected to the USB port I get the following message (when booting)

ehci_hcd 0000:00:03.3: BIOS handoff failed (112, 1010001)
ehci_hcd 0000:00:03.3: continuing after BIOS bug...
ehci_hcd 0000:00:03:3: irq 23, pci mem 0xdffff000
ehci_hcd 0000:00:03.3: new USB bus registered, assign bus number 1

and then it freezes (the cursor no longer moves).

How do I fix this?

thank you in advance

Its a bit difficult to tell from here. Its possible that the hotplug system is doing stuff wrong. You can try booting your system by adding to your bootloader line.

When you switch the machine on, and grub comes up, select your linux option. Then type after it nohotplug. Hopefully that will work though I think different distros handle things different ways.

Alex.

P.S. It could be that your usb system is mis diagnosed. You may not have an ehci usb system but a ohci one. Its difficult to tell.
