Unhappy microsoft mouse in Linux

Yeah uhm if you look at my bio I am not a linux guy yet. For the past 6 years I have been a tech for MS. SO, I have a Microsoft basic optical Wheel Mouse and a Zonet KVM switch. But, if I put the ps/2 wheel mouse setting in xdesktop then the mouse will start freaking out in xdesktop and xterm. I have to leave it at generic 2 button mouse. But, I miss my scrolling. I know I am pathetic. but, just for now. I am getting sold on linux if I spend just a little more time wiht it, I might like it more. But, if you all would, please help me. Do any of you have any suggetions. I have redhat 9 and kernel 2.4.20-8

THX

you should just need to change the mouse protocol you are iusing. open up /etc/X11/XF86config (or xorg.conf and change the protocol in the Pointer section to "IMPS/2" (IM = IntelliMouse) or another one, i think exploreps/2 is another possible one

Yeah it was already set at that. Here is what is says:

Identifier "DevInputMice"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"

I don't know if this will help, but try and go to http://www.mandrakeusers.org and search for a post by me (theYinYeti) containing "xev" and "xmodmap". I wrote it a long time ago so I don't remember all details. You may have to follow the instructions with several "Protocol"s, until you find the one that suits your mouse.

Yves.

Well I got the scroll and mouse working in xdesktop but in xterm it is still sporadic but, I guess I really don't need it but anyways, so this is what I changed:

Identifier "DevInputMice"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"

I changed the protocol. So, we'll see about the terminal one. That one is not a big neccesity though.

Any suggestions there? If not then hey Thank you for the help with it so far.

not so
