Microsoft 5 Button mouse

I can't seem to figure this out. I have Slackware 9, and a Microsoft 5 button usb optical mouse. I can't seem to get the two side buttons to work.

I've tried to make the scroll buttons "6 7" on the XFree86 config, and adding the xmodmap thing. Those just don't seem to work. I'm wondering if it isn't because I load gpm on boot.

So, is there a way to get the mouse to work with gpm? or should I disable gpm, and try the other way again?

I think you need to give more info. After the Zaxismapping "6 7" and xmodmap what exactly is not working? Try running 'xev' in a console window to see what the buttons are doing. You could also post the relevant section of your XF86Config-4.

You could also search this forum for e.g. 'mouse', 'scroll' and 'imwheel' as this is a pretty common source of problems.

Here is my XFree86 Config

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
# Option "Buttons" "5"
# Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
# Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
# Option "Resolution" "180"
Option "Buttons" "7"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"

I got the mouse to scroll with buttons "6 7" just barely.

Here is the link I tried using to fix the mouse:

I resolved most of this last night. It was just a matter of the protocol.

Now, I just need to get mozilla to recognise it.
