microphone works but nothing records

I have a an HDA Intel audio card, with drivers working etc. I can hear sound, and when I plug in my microphone I can hear input from the microphone in my earphones, but for some reason nothing seems to be willing to record the sound. I want to use skype, but I have been trying to get audacity to work since I figure it doesn't get more straightforward than that, and yet for some reason no audio comes through. Has anyone had a problem like this? I have tried all the different input devices but nothing. Any ideas?

Got it!

Ok I got it. In alsamixer I had capture turned up but apparently "digital" has to be turned up (in the capture menu of alsamixer) as well.
