I wanna ask about this microcode update thing.

While linux is loading(after power on), one of the things it does is update my cpus microcode
I read about this uCode patch somewhere.
Why does it do this every time i boot? As i understand it, the microcode is the low level firmware, which runs my cpu. i thought it was stored on an eeprom inside the cpu. if this is so, wont continually updating it eventually wear it out?
