mic: can hear in speakers but can't record or hear in programs such as skype
 
SOLVED: I also had to unmute the thing called "Capture", not just the mic...

Here's the problem: I can hear the microphone in my speakers, but I can't record the sound, or use it with programs such as Skype or Gizmo on my Suse 10.0.
It worked previously, but I had't used it for a while and I don't know exactly what I did to make it stop working (kernel upgrade, installed tons of programs).
It works fine with the same programs in Slackware.
The sound card is Creative SB Live
Yes, it is unmuted, capture is on.

I had problems too but not anymore.
 
It looks a lot like your system is seeing two of almost every part of your sound being active. The easiest way to deal with the mic or any other sound difficulties especially in Skype is to go to the Skype web page and visit the Skype forum. You will automatically find a lot of messages with very good advice pertaining to every situation pertaining to making the sound work perfectly in Skype.

I looked in this forum, the Skype forum and the Gizmo forum, with no luck. But thanks for the suggestion anyway.

EDIT: I got it working :D . I had one thing called "Capture" in kmix which I had to unmute as well. Now I only have a small problem regarding the sound quality, but I can live with that...

I have exactly the same problem, but I can't find a "capture" slider or button in the "Output" "Input" or "Switches" area of KMix.

Where exactly did you set it?

PS: I'm using a C-Media PCI CMI8738-MC6 sound card on Suse 9.3

Finally, I found that using gamix from the KDE control panel menu has a "capture" button.

After enabling it, everything works fine, and my SJphone voip calls work OK.
