Mic Boost missing in alsa mixer

I installed Ubuntu 6.10 for AMD64 on the box of my mate and we noticed that there is no mic boost switch in the mixer settings (amixer, alsamixer, etc). How come? Do we need another driver? He has an Asus motherboard with an onboard nforce sound card which shows up as something like "nforce HDA" in the mixer settings. The Nvidia website says their nforce drivers are already in the kernel:

???

Thx for you help!

I have an ASUS motherboard with nvidia ck804 on-board sound card (Realtek chip); alsamixer shows me mic boost.

If you mate doesn't see it, it's possible that the sound card/chip doesn't have the mic boost feature.

That would be an explanation, but the sound chip _definitely_ supports mic boost, as my mate used the feature in his previous operating $y$tem
