MEPIS not recognizing integrated audio

I have MEPIS Linux installed on two older computers. Linux won't recognize the speakers in either of them. Is there a hardware problem, or do I have to configure it to find these. When I had XP installed, it worked with these.

is it the speakers or the soundcard not being recognized? if it's the soundcard you may have to install alsa. also check volumn levels on my laptop mepis sets the volumn way too low by default i turn them all almost all the way up then use my multimedia programs to adjust them up or down.

The computer has a small onboard speaker. When MEPIs boots, it gives an error message saying it doesn't recognize the device. I'll see if Alsa works.
