MEPIS 3.3 no sound error
Hello all,
I just installed SimplyMEPIS 3.3 recently. I have not heard one sound yet, from Linux. When I log in (to any user) I get this error: ***** Informational artsmessage Sound Server informational message Error while initializing the sound driver device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device) The sound driver will continue, using the nul output device. ***** Thanks in advance for all your help! What sound card do you have?

Re: MEPIS 3.3 no sound error
My motherboard is: Intel Corporation JN440BX AA729057-406
My sound: Crystal WDM Audio Codec (2x), Crystal WDM Audio Control Registers. LinuxRobot |
Thats the audio codec your card uses, I need to know what the card itself is. If you are unsure of this paste the output of the command lspci and we will figure it out
|
I got the same message. My sound card is C-media.

Which Cmedia card? Cmedia is a manufacturer, they put out more than one card needing more than one driver. Also see Cmedia ALSA documentation.

Okay, that we can work with. Open up a terminal, and type su it will prompt you for your root account password, type that in and hit enter. Now type modprobe snd-cmipci if it works properly you will get NO output. If you get an error paste it here. do not continue if there is an error. now do echo "snd-cmipci" >> /etc/modules this will autoload it. Now open up kmix and turn up all the volumes in the outputs tab to levels you are comfortable with. Then turn off all of the lights in the switches tab, turning on only what you know for sure you have. your shound should be working now. |
