Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question Memtest on a headless machine?

Just bought a new dedicated server from ServerBeach, and I'm trying to compile a new kernel (gave us 2.4.18 with everything modules, would prefer 2.6.x with RAID-1 and the filesystem drivers built in). I get segfaults when trying to compile with gcc 3.3 (I've seen it before with gcc 3.0 and gcc 3.1), so I fell back to gcc 2.95. Compiled, installed in lilo, 'lilo -R 2.6.8', and it doesn't come up when it reboots.

Since the console is in New York city, I don't know why. Thank god for 'lilo -R command'.

I built a duplicate of the machine at home, and transferred the linux kernel binaries to the duplicate. When trying to boot, I get "crc error -- System halted."

The last time I saw these problems, it was bad RAM. Unfortunately, I can't run memtest86 because the machine is in a completely different city. Asking a tech monkey to do it for me will cost $$$, and I'll feel foolish for accusing them of bad RAM if there's no results.

My first question is "what would cause crc error in a kernel image?". Google Groups only has references to 'caused by a bad floppy disk,' which isn't the case here.

My second question is "how can I test the RAM on a machine I don't have console access to?"

well, normally i'd look at:

remote serial howto

but that would probably require a really long serial cable from toronto to NY. but, it might be modifiable for dial in.

as for the ram problems, you might want to check the cooling on the board. i had a server that would choke on large gcc compiles. it got worse as the heat in my house would come on at night.

no idea about crc issues.

hth,
rob
