memory stick doesn't mount, not visible in lsusb

I got a new 16GB memory stick and plugged it in. The OS (Kubuntu) didn't recognise it as a new device and lsusb returns no new device connected.

Dmesg, however, recognises that something has been plugged in:

Code:
[30166.817429] usb 3-8: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 12
[30166.951181] usb 3-8: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

[30171.992889] sd 9:0:0:0: [sdg] Mode Sense: 0b 00 00 08
[30171.992893] sd 9:0:0:0: [sdg] Assuming drive cache: write through

[30171.995443] sd 9:0:0:0: [sdg] Attached SCSI removable disk
[30171.995505] sd 9:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg5 type 0
I'm not sure why it recognises it as a SCSI disk...

This same thing happens on both PCs here so I'm almost sure it's a dud; just wondering if anyone has anything else to add. I'll test it on a Windows machine on Monday before binning it and making a resolution not to buy off eBay from Hong Kong again.

You memory stick is recognized by the kernel, but it seems it's not formatted. Try to format it and see if it works.
