memory read

my memory setup was 768mb pc133 sdram(one 256mb stick and one 512mb stick); i just added a 512mb stick. the bios picked it up for a 1.3gb but slack 8.0 is showing 970mb total physical memory. performance seems to have picked up, but i can't make the numbers jive with what might be wrong here. ideas appreciated. thanx.

Hmmm, see if the kernel has a support for memory amount more than 1GB first (it has different stepping 1G, 4G,etc), then try
append="mem=1300M" in the lilo.conf see if it helps.

you may be right as i am using 2.2.19 and i configured 2.4.18 today and i set it up for the 4gb support-though for other as yet unknown reasons, i haven't gotten it up and running yet-but thanks, i appreciate your help

Yeah neo-fiveby7 nailed it, the 2.4.18 in Slackware doesn't support highmem by default, it makes the kernel quite a bit bigger and patrick wanted to dodge that bullet for at least one more release. I think he may have slapped a highmem.i in maybe?

Cheers,
