memory question

How can I tell what kind of memory I have installed without opening the case and looking at it?

Is there some kind of command for that?

Thanks.

What kind or how much? How much can be determined through 'free'. I'm not sure of a technique to determine what kind, though I'm sure something exists.

It was built from scratch. It's not a Dell or Compaq or anything like that. It's a Pentium 3 1.6 MHz. I just need to find out if it is PC2100, PC3200, etc. Is there also a way to find out what kind of motherboard I have?

'lspci' might help you determine the model of your motherboard. In many cases, the motherboard model is not easy to get because it is not reported to the system: only the chipset. Conversely, it's the chipset that you worry about: almost all motherboards implement the same chipset in a "standard way".
