Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Memory Problems

I tried to install Mandrake 9.1 and when i had a gig of memory in my system all i got was a blank screen and my caps locl and scroll lock lights on my keyboard would flash simotaniously. I would then take out a 256 stick out and it boots right up. So i thought i had a bad stick of memory. So i then replace the 256 and took out the other 256 still boot up. SO i put the gig back in and no boot .. got flashing lights and everything.

Anyone know if there is a way around if linux has a memory limit. Kinda weird if you ask me that there would be a limit.

At what point does it fail - if it fails before ou get to the bootloader stage then your bios probably doesn't support more than 256 or 512.

Most likely a BIOS or motherboard problem. Linux would still boot most likely only detecting partial amount of memory in most cases.
It could also be the order your putting the RAM if you have any open slots for more RAM, refer to your Motherboard manual most likely for effecient configuration for your RAM.

"If you are compiling a kernel which will never run on a machine with more than 960 megabytes of total physical RAM, answer "off" here (default choice and suitable for most users)"

Above is from 'make menuconfig' kernel option help.
So you need change kernel settings CONFIG_NOHIGHMEM for instance using make menuconfig:
Processor type and features --->
High Memory Support to 4GB
and recompile the kernel
