Angry Memory Dazed And Confused

New here!! Hello all. I am new to my site and job also.
I was handed a call about an error message. (MEMORY DAZED AND CONFUSED) REDHAT 7.2 I believe since even the SA for the box didn't know. It is running on a Compaq DL580 with 4 processors and 4 Gigs of 256MB DIMMS(SYNC,100MHz,CL2,ECC,REG) Is there any way this could not be from memory and from something else. Also is there any diagnostic software to check hardware and memory issues.

Have gotten more on the OS. It is REDHAT LINUX ADVANCED SERVER RELEASE 2.1AS/i686 (PENSACOLA).

Thanks
New to Redhat.

Also have to use co-workers e-mail and desk

Welcome to Linuxquestions.org.

I recommend upgrading to 7.3 or if possible 8.0. Redhat 7.2 was the one of the worst from a UI, security and compatibility pont of view. I also recommend shooting your sysadmin for not knowing this.

Some of those kernel error messages are a hoot, like when you're logged in or try to with a UID that isn't in /etc/passwd, syslogd (I think) says: "go away, you do not exist"

Then I had a kernel panic once with an ethernet card and all that was on the screen was:

eth1: Something Wicked happened!!!

It might be some bad memory, happens in hotter boxen with a lot of processes, check out www.memtest86.com

Sometimes it'll cack errors on certain runs that are ghosts, just the memory being incompatible with the test, but for the glaring most part this utility rocks, its a boot floppy memory tester.

Cheers,

Finegan

Hi..

The kernel coming with Advanced server having lot issues with memory and problem with kswapd also.

To check

Install AMIDIAG in DOS and run the memory test. it will check the memory .

If no problem in the memory , upgrade the kernel to latest one

Thank all of you very much. I will be contacting the SA for the box and explaining the possible fixes and tests.
