Some of those kernel error messages are a hoot, like when you're logged in or try to with a UID that isn't in /etc/passwd, syslogd (I think) says: "go away, you do not exist"
Then I had a kernel panic once with an ethernet card and all that was on the screen was:
eth1: Something Wicked happened!!!
It might be some bad memory, happens in hotter boxen with a lot of processes, check out
www.memtest86.com
Sometimes it'll cack errors on certain runs that are ghosts, just the memory being incompatible with the test, but for the glaring most part this utility rocks, its a boot floppy memory tester.
