Mdk 10.1 - also no sound

I am aware of thread:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...5&pagenumber=1
However, I hate hijackers so I would rather not be one myself. That thread apparently does not have a resolution yet.

I am using Mandrake 10.1, installed two weeks ago. To the best of my knowledge, everything works except for sound. No sound has come out the speakers since Mdk was installed. If I try the play command I get:

sox: Unable to reset OSS driver. Possibly accessing an invalid file/device

/dev/dsp is not set as executable. I tried chmod +x'ing it and got no result. ls /dev/sound gives me audio, sequencer, and sequencer2, all ln's that simply ../ back to the parent directory.

lsmod shows me: (among other things)

cs46xx 63820 0
ac97_codec 16844 1 cs46xx
ad1848 30140 0
uart401 9092 0
sound 72428 2 ad1848,uart401
soundcore 7008 2 cs46xx,sound

Harddrake (gui wizard) shows my sound card as a Cirrus CS4610

The other thread mentions running alsaconf. A search of /sbin shows nothing that contains alsa. However, when I urpmi (mdk apt-get) for alsa, it says that is already installed.

Kmix says no mixers are installed (current mixer list is blank).

What steps would be recommended to test sound capabilities? Could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Andrew

hi,

i too had a few problems with sound on 10.1, particularly recording from inputs... my soundcard uses the same dsp chip as yours, but i don't think that's necessarily the issue here..

have you tried running alsaconf, as root, from a command line?

also, another thing i found, using kde, was that the arts sound server was messing things up. try turning arts off and see if there's any change. not ideal, but it might help establish where the problem lies..

I actually had tried running alsaconf, however it is not on the computer. If I type "al" and hit tab, my command autocompletion options are "alias alignmargins alignment-icons allxojpanels". No alsa anything.

I did a urpmi for alsa, and it said everything was already installed. Is there another way to configure alsa?

Doing a find for alsa does show up numerous results, but nothing that looks like a configuration script. I did just find /etc/sysconfig/alsa that apparently gives the option to disable oss. I guess I could try that.

Any other ideas are welcome.

that's really strange.... it's located in /usr/sbin on my install of 10.0....

something seems a bit kooky about your install. not sure what else to suggest, sorry!
