Question MD5628D-L-C (536EP) ambient

recently bought an E-tech avp56pci v92 modem. Found the intel linux drivers binary compiled for mandrake 8.2.
Next question: Can anyone give me a step by step guidance for this total newbie in mandrake 9.0.
The chipset is ambient MD5628D-L-C (536EP).
Off course I simply tried to follow the six steps in the read-me file not even knowing how to compile the kernel. And off course that did not work.

Much obliged,

elzo(thats my real name)
Amsterdam.
